Fair Warning: Mobile Sites Aren’t Just An Option Anymore

By July 26, 2013 No Comments

If you have toiled away at fixing up your business’ website in such a way that it will appear at the top of Google’s search results, your work is not yet finished. Larry Engel recently wrote about the new changes to Google’s algorithm for ranking smartphone results. The changes will bump down smartphone results that do not have a responsive mobile version.

Yikes. That means if your website’s mobile version (if you have one) is not up to par with what Google expects, your site could be demoted pretty far down the list of search results, or possibly not even be on them. And since more and more internet activity is being conducted through smartphones, especially by those looking for jobs, it’s not just advantageous to have a mobile-optimized website. It’s crucial.

As with any and all SEO-related news (even from the mouth of Google), we struggle to separate fact from fiction.  But until we hear otherwise, we’ll assume this news is true.  So if your website opens as a regular HTML desktop version on a smartphone, you’re in trouble. If your in-place mobile website only directs to the home page, or doesn’t link correctly, you’re in trouble. And if you have content on your site that doesn’t display correctly on mobile devices (think Flash video), you’re in trouble. Google is a great tool to get discovered, but when they change the rules, all we can do is follow them.
