Steps to Transforming Your Job Into One You Love

By July 30, 2013 No Comments

It is normal for people to have periods of time at work when they are feeling bored, frustrated, restless or just uninterested in their current occupation. If such a period does come up, a valid option is to possibly consider quitting the job. Maybe you want to go into business for yourself or maybe you feel drawn to a different career. Given the uncertain nature of the current job market and the ups and downs of self-employment, you might also want to consider sticking it out with your current employer for just a little while longer to see if your situation won’t improve. There are a number of ways that might help to make things better.

1. Before quitting your job, you should approach your boss and ask them about finding ways to change the kind of work that you do. Depending on why you are unhappy, your boss will most likely see that you would be more productive doing something else and is likely to choose to work with your needs instead of seeing your talent moved elsewhere. Your boss is not going to want to lose you if there is something that can be easily changed to make you happy and keep you with the company.

2. If you are simply just tired of your routine, ask to be partnered with new people. That doesn’t mean you don’t like the people you are currently working with, it just will allow you to get a fresh perspective on the job and maybe help you to reevaluate your relationships with those parts of the job that you might not like.

3. Change your surrounding so that your workspace is more homey and relaxing. You don’t want to feel like you are in prison at your desk for 40 plus hours a week staring at the same wall. Add as much personality to your work space as your employer allows. You can bring in photos, decorations or a nice plant. If the way your desk or chair is setup is making you uncomfortable, you can ask your manager about being able to change the furniture or receiving assistance in properly adjusting your office necessities.

4. One of the worst parts of any office job is having an inbox full of unread emails and a desk covered with unexamined documents. Plan at least one session a week to go through everything, organize your workspace and find ways to use your space in a more efficient way.

5. Another way to improve your outlook at work is to start living a fuller life at home. Often, you might end up hating your time at work because it is getting in the way of your ability to do other things that you want to do. Be sure that you are spending time off with the people that you care about and doing things that will enrich your life.
