The Correct Steps to Termination

By March 25, 2013 No Comments

Nobody wants to be on either end of the table when an employee is going to be let go.

So many thoughts and questions go through each individuals head, wondering what they did wrong, if anything, and is termination really the right call.

If the employee is not performing up to par, has a bad attitude, or just unprofessional, then termination may be the answer.

First, you must let them know what they are doing wrong, so they have a chance to improve and are aware of their situation.  Providing the proper feedback is essential so that they know they are failing.

If, however, the employee continues with their usual tendencies and performance is not increased then take the proper steps to terminate them.

Be sure to document each meeting with the employee and their actions, so that there is always something to look back on.

Also, hold a termination meeting that can also be their “exit interview”, not giving the employee more than a few minutes’ notice.  Premeditated worry is unnecessary and only makes things worse for the employee.

Each termination is different depending on the individuals involved, but there is always something to be learned.  For some, it could be the starts of something new, even better.  Others may take a while to get over it and struggle.

Be professional and take the correct steps to make things run as smoothly as possible.
