It’s becoming more and more common for employees to become unsatisfied with their current jobs and search for new ones, and when you’re an employer, you (a) want to keep your employees and (b) drawn in new ones. So how do you become (and stay) an ‘employer of choice?’ Here’s what Jody Ordioni had to say about becoming this employer ideal:
Know who you want in. What kind of worker comes to mind when you visualize your ideal employee? Make your recruiting process accessible to those kinds of people. In addition, you should know what your kind of ideal employee looks for in a business.
Be interesting and straightforward. Workers don’t want to be overworked, but they don’t want to be underworked either. Your business should provide stimulation and challenge. The end result should be clear as well. Make sure your employees have a clear idea of what comes next in their career with you (promotions, raises, etc.)
Recognize and reward. If your employees feel valued, their output will reflect it. Show your appreciation with little bonuses. These don’t necessarily have to be financial: they can be other small perks. Be creative.
Becoming this ‘employer of choice’ is no easy feat. It takes work, dedication, and honesty. But the benefits of striving for this goal are many, and when it comes to this competitive economy, bringing in and holding onto workers is more important than ever.
