If you’re an employer, maintaining a great company culture is important for success. I’ve frequently heard five issues that employees consider when evaluating their workplaces. Whether you’re running a business or working for one, these are points you should consider.
Does management deliver on its promises? Many times things can be said in passing and stay there—while the employee continues to wonder if they will ever appear. Make sure the lines of communication stay open when promises or opportunities are discussed.
Is there an appropriate balance between an employee’s personal and professional lives? It’s crucial to take this into account when you’re an employer. I know it’s easy to want your employees to over-deliver in their work lives, but imbalance can lead to unforeseen chaos in their personal lives. Guess what? That can affect their deliverables. Strike a manageable balance.
Do raises get awarded to the correct candidates? While seniority is bandied about during internal reviews, make sure you are actually rewarding those that have delivered results that are in line with company objectives. Not only does this keep high-achievers motivated, but it keeps those with seniority on their toes.
Are employees proud to say they work where they do? Your company brand, your correct reward systems and your employees’ general well-being will dictate their responses to this. The relationship between a company and its workforce should be treated as one—if both parties are happy, they will be sure to let people know.
Can everyone in the company say, “I can be myself around here?” Authenticity is key. I talk about being genuine and authentic often because it is central to the success of any person working for a business. If a healthy company culture is fostered, whether it is corporate or small, vitality is assured and the money will follow.
Whether you’re a potential candidate or an executive conducting an internal review, take these five questions into consideration and you’ll be set for a fulfilling workplace.
