When the decision has been made to fire an employee, many employers are not sure how to handle the situation. When an employee’s dignity, and their manager’s professionalism, is on the line, it is best to know how to be gentle, but firm, when notifying the employee of his or her termination. Some things to keep in mind are:
- What setting have you chosen? Show some respect to your employee by keeping things private; besides a public meltdown in the hallway is not going to boost morale.
- Bring a witness to avoid any he-said-she-said situations if the employee takes legal action.
- Avoid saying that you’re sorry about the employees termination, because you don’t want to make the employee question it’s validity, or tell them that this “will be a good thing for them” pretty insensitive considering you are still employed.
- Have a list of information the employee needs with you, he or she may not be able to process what you are telling them.
- Keep it quick, 15 to 20 minutes maximum, but specify what it is that has caused their termination.
- The direct manager should give the employee the bad news or the employee may think his or her supervisor does not support it.
