It’s hard to like a business if you don’t like its leadership. And a business that isn’t well liked is not a successful business. A successful business starts with good leadership. So what qualities are essential for good leaders to possess? Some are fairly simple and obvious; others are simple, but not always as obvious.
Good leaders need to be good listeners. Not only do good listeners hear what their employees and stakeholders say, they hear what customers and the competition say. Good leaders also need to be able to sell their ideas or products by being good storytellers. That doesn’t mean they should spin yarns about their products, services or ideas. It means they need to transfer the excitement they feel to their employees, stakeholders and customers by being authentic and having integrity.
But some of the qualities good leaders need to possess aren’t quite as obvious. Good leaders need to be appreciative and grateful. They need to simplify their ideas so they are better understood. And above all, good leaders need to follow the golden rule – probably the most effective, but often overlooked, quality of a good leader.
