Ever heard of the term ‘idea people?’ You ought to by now. Dramatic, huge innovators like Google and Apple have pretty much fully utilized these employees for furthering their companies, and you could do worse than learn a lot from them. Dr. John Sullivan wrote on the seemingly simple process: create ideas, collaborate on the ideas, and put them into place. But the most important step of that process is actually getting people to create ideas, and it’s curiously the most ignored.
The easiest fix to that, then, is to start specifically hiring idea people. Find out what they ‘look like’ and seek them out. Then, you need to retain them. Idea people need outlets for their ideas to be shared and collaborated on, and if your business provides said outlets, then your idea people will thrive. Of course, you need idea people in all aspects of your business. Otherwise, they’ll be moving and growing at different speeds.
The word ‘innovation’ is tossed around quite a bit, and idea people are the ones catching it. Finding out who your idea people are and hiring more of them is the first step to furthering your company in new and creative ways.
